The Story - After a truck smeared her across the pavement on her way to work one morning, Tara Davis expected that to be the end. Instead, she's offered the chance to become the first new god in millennia. The catch? She has to kill the goddess currently holding the title.

------------------------------
The wooden ball shuddered around me. I fought against the feeling that I might topple over at any moment, leaning on the curved side of the construct as hard as I dared. It gave way beneath my palms, rolling onward—and I pushed forward step by step with it.
With every shuddering step I took, I felt the ball wobble beneath me. We were floating, after all. But there was no reason to expect it to stop floating, so I tried to put it from my mind. Every now and again it was shoved to the side by a crashing wave, but even those lacked the same severity as before.
Somewhere deep below, I felt my seaweed fingers clinging to Poseidon, clawing him back into their embrace every time he tried to rip free. Oh, he was trying, all right. And he’d be here soon, so I needed to make the most of it.
Sweat soaked through my hair. This was exercise unlike anything I’d ever experienced before, and I certainly hadn’t signed up for it. I closed my eyes, focusing on the steady rhythm of pushing the ball through the waves—and on the glowing lines of the tree that waited ahead.
Another splash. Another wave hitting the ball. And then I lurched, coming dangerously close to slamming my forehead into the ball’s inside.
“Ah,” Ebb said delicately. “I believe he has returned.”
“I figured that out,” I muttered. Because I could feel it too. The wooden ball was starting to bob up and down, spinning faintly in the steadily-growing currents and eddies below. And the waves around me weren’t so small anymore. Which meant-
A flicker of pain shot through me as Poseidon ripped free of his seaweed bonds. Through the fish, I heard him let out another sea-splitting bellow of fury, spots of blood darkening the water where the roots had torn too deeply.
And I saw him shoot toward the surface.
“Crap,” I said. “Time to go.”
“Indeed,” Ebb said. The bastard sounded like he was laughing.
Whatever. Let him laugh. I threw myself toward the ball with abandon, staggering back to my feet each time my vessel made another rotation and threw me to the ground.
How stupid I had to look, if anyone was watching. I spared a moment of grim humor for the Olympians and aspects looking down on us. With any luck, they’d just see a giant wooden ball cutting a swath through the waters of the challenge, blind to me inside.
Closer. The tree was larger now, close enough for me to see the roots with clear definition. Close enough to throw a rock and hit, if I dared say so myself. Just another few moments, and-
A heavy, wet sound rose over my exhausted panting. Something that sounded way, way too much like a massive human-shaped man breaking through the waves.
“There is nowhere to run!” I heard Poseidon cry, wiping away any doubts that might have lingered in my mind.
Cursing under my breath, I slit the wooden ball behind me just enough to steal a peek over my shoulder—and froze. Poseidon stood half out of the water, rising like a statue to split the waves, his trident poised over one shoulder. To throw, it looked like. I doubted very much my wooden shell would protect against the pissed-off Olympian.
Decision time.
“Fuck this,” I whispered, making up my mind almost as quickly as the thought crossed it. It wasn’t decision time, it was go time.
My palms slammed into the sides of the orb, driving them outward. The ball split like a flower opening its petals, the wood falling away to crash down into the water. Gritting my teeth, I curled my fingers in, refusing to let the bark go so easily.
The water-darkened, rippled brown twisted, warping back in around my feet. Buds sprang up from its leading edge, churning forward into entirely-new wood.
And like a bridge, it shot straight toward the island that glowed faintly before me.
“Enough!” I heard Poseidon roar behind me as I bolted forward. “All you know how to do is lie and run!”
Not entirely wrong. It wasn’t my fault the two were so damn effective. My arms splayed wide out to either side, giving me a meager ounce of stability as I stumbled forward along the balancing beam-wide bridge I’d made. I’d have appreciated something wider, but that’d take energy and focus I just didn’t have.
And the island loomed closer, golden sand teeming from its banks. The flames of the torch that waited in front of the door flickered merrily, enticing me in.
I was all too happy to accept the offer—but as another three steps vanished beneath me and I hadn’t felt a trident grate against my armor, I risked another glance back.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Because Poseidon hadn’t gone more than a step or two inland from his watery perch.
No, he’d taken up a dramatic pose, clenching his trident with both hands over his head. His hair flapped around his head. The fishing nets strewn about his waist swayed gently, limp and sodden.
More ominously still, the water between us was starting to bubble and froth—and a dark mass rose from the sea behind the god.
Fuck. I tore my eyes off him, putting everything I had into running. I could half-remember some stories from my high school years, something about distant countries and early warnings. When an ocean looked like that, bad things were coming. Whatever Poseidon had dreamt up, it was time to get as far away as I could.
My strides lengthened, my not-feet morphing beneath me to flex and bounce. The bridge ahead of me shortened by the second as I ate up the difference between my speed and my magic’s. I tried to ignore it, tried to tell myself there’d be ground beneath my next step. The sand drifted closer, the island filling my vision.
Shortening my step, I gathered myself up—and with one final push, I soared across the gap.
My feet hit solid ground. Not wood, not bark, not seaweed. Sand. My knees crumpled beneath me with the impact, sending me tumbling, but I didn’t care. I’d never felt so glad to be covered in the stuff before.
Before I could get too comfortable, I staggered back to my feet, lurching inland. The door. It was right there—all I had to do was get my hands on it, and-
Something screamed out to me. The dead, eerie silence of the air, perhaps, or the sudden silence of the waves behind me. It was like some sixth sense came alive in an instant, banging its evolutionary fists against the solid stone of my skull. I spun, my eyes wide.
The tsunami behind me surged toward the island, foaming white and fast as lightning.
I heard what sounded an awful lot like Ebb sucking in a breath. “Terra-”
I know! The door might as well have been a thousand miles away—I couldn’t outrun that wave, and there’d be no consolation points for making it halfway there.
So I hurled myself toward the ground, grabbing hold of that nearby tree. It had roots. I could use those.
They erupted from the sand like a thousand needly fingers, twining together tighter and tighter in a circle around me. I willed the barrier higher, even as I curled myself low to solid ground. Needed to be small. Needed to make myself a gentle target—anything too big would just get washed away.
As the final fingers wrapped together over my head, I heard the hiss of water climbing over sand. The blow came a heartbeat later.
My wooden dome shook, rattling together. I bit back a yelp, squeezing my hands into fists. The roots spread outward, melding together into an impenetrable barrier.
That didn’t stop water from dripping down onto the back of my neck. That didn’t stop the sand from shuddering beneath me, or the roar of water surging over my shelter.
Hold together, I prayed. Hell if I knew to what. To the old Terra, maybe, the hold-out bitch that she was. Keep it together. Don’t fall apart on me now.
The wave was endless—or maybe it just felt like that to me. By the time the crashing din started to fade I was white and pale, my fingernails digging bloody marks into my palms. I waited for a moment, gauging the sound, the shaking of my wooden structure. This was a fine line to walk—quick enough to stay ahead of my opponent, but not hasty enough I got washed back out to sea.
When I couldn’t bear the thought of waiting another second, I opened the tiniest gap in the shell, low to the sand. A spray of water shot through the opening, then died.
Good enough. I surged to my feet, shucking off the shelter like an unwanted coat. It clattered to the sand. I lunged forward, my eyes glued to the door.
Again, that sixth sense screamed out a warning. It was just a tiny sound, barely audible over the crashing water—a foot crunching into the sand. But I heard. And I didn’t hesitate.
Pivoting on one foot, I grabbed for my palm. My knife came free with glorious, reassuring ease. I kept turning, kept drawing.
And with a crash of sparks, I caught the trident aimed at my back against its crossguard.

2021.10.19 03:51 skpxpr3d4tor Where to get involved in more coordinated matches?

I've really been enjoying HLL these past few months.
One issue I'm starting to run into is the lack of proper coordination in quite a few of my games. It's either too many two-man locked squads, a commander with no mic, a level 5 SL who doesn't know how OPs and Garrisons work, squad members with no mics etc. etc. I'm not against new players (I've had some fantastic games teaching blueberries) or anything.
The games where it all clicks together seem few and far between right now - so I guess I'm asking what the options are to get get most out of the game. Join a clan? How would I go about looking for HLL clans as recruiting is banned on the sub? Are there events for this kind of thing?
Any help appreciated!

2021.10.19 03:51 ShaunGirard I have a real question.

I am not taking a side I'm really just curious. I had the thought that if the the earth is spinning at just over a 1000mph would you not notice everything going around you really fast at the poles? Also why don't we ever notice a change when we travel? Imagine a spinning ball it would take longer to do a rotation at the equator and no time at the pole. Think of a merry-go-round at a park, you can feel a big difference for outside to center.

Hi so I’m thinking of trying hello fresh, but I have a lot of questions. First of all I hesitant to try it bc I can be a picky eater, also wondering what type of recipes they have, on the website it has like 4 different meal categories. How much control do you have over the meals you receive? Also do y’all think it’s worth it? Thank you for your help
